154 Spirituality Studies tional psychometric standards, this level of overlap raises the question of whether SOM and OOM are measuring sufficiently distinct constructs or functioning as components of a single higher-order meaning dimension in this population. Consequently, all findings reported separately for SOM and OOM should be interpreted with caution, as the empirical distinctiveness of the two subscales remains unestablished. Future studies should employ confirmatory factor analysis and multitrait-multimethod approaches with independent samples to determine the factorial structure of meaning in life in Muslim adolescent populations before treating SOM and OOM as separable constructs in hypothesis testing. A number of possible shortcomings will be discussed here. The first is the insufficient breadth of the participants’ cultural and religious backgrounds. Given the less religious, multi-cultural, and more diverse participants in the original study, the findings may not be applicable to them. Second, the follow-up time frame is short, and the researchers are likely to be unable to draw conclusions regarding the persistence of the patterns described. Findings from the original study should be more focused than those of the current study. Future studies should be longitudinal and draw from a wider sample to include a more diverse population. Future studies should also include a qualitative component to more fully capture the complex, individualized experiences of adolescents. Finally, the inclusion of gender-sensitive constructs, especially those dealing with the emotional expression and reflective processes of adolescent girls, will likely improve the relevance and impact of future interventions. From all the comments it is clear that the current study is part of the literature that advocates for culturally aware and spiritually integrated approaches to the psychological development of adolescents. Notes [1] The intervention sessions were conducted over a period of eight weeks, with each session lasting approximately 90 minutes. [2] All participants provided informed consent, and parental consent was obtained for participants under 18 years of age.
