Its frame is a poem of kōan-like verses. Each verse is followed by an explanation in the form of a chapter of the story. The main hero, the Wandering Knight, gradually passes through all the stages of his spiritual journey until he gets back to where he came from. The difference is that he comes back transformed, poorer in what he had to leave, but richer in his new spiritual experience.
